Chapter 24

Sleep had been pitiful, and when Tom heard the distant sound of a tractor trailer, his eyes flicked open. Bone weary, he was stretched out as much as possible in the back seat of Bishop’s Cadillac.

Two days had passed since his impromptu meeting with Mike Grevo.

Leaving the estate had been relatively easy. Once he’d fired the three shots in the air, the guards had converged on the west side of the house as expected. Meanwhile, Tom had passed through the interior to the east wing, exiting through a side door near the large garage. From there it was a quick jog to the tree line and the wall, having gotten over it just as the barking dogs—now released—converged on his position.

Then the real uncertainty began.

It had been a huge risk to meet Mike and give away his location, knowing the manpower and resources available to the syndicate. His only hope at the time, was that Mike would be the reasonable, clear headed man, he remembered. So far that had been the case. In fact, it was Mike who had told Tom where to find Tony later the next day. This happened after Tom had spent a full day staking out the Bonnie Briar Estate. With no luck in finding Tony Manatone, Tom had finally called Mike from an untraceable cellphone he’d purchased while fueling at a 7-Eleven store. The call had been brief, with no courtesies. And as it turned out, this had happened shortly after Mike had organized another emergency meeting with the heads of the syndicate.

Mike said he’d seen the flash-drive-video of Charley Mack killing George, and in conjunction with the execution of Frank Manatone by Tony’s own hand, it was easy to see that Tom had spoken the truth. Not that it changed the fact that the syndicate was still after him, but at least the lie had been exposed and it would change their focus. Now Tony Manatone—the killer of the Godfather himself—would draw the mob’s ire, and according to Mike, become their top priority. This was helpful, and in theory, meant less men looking for Tom—at least for the moment.

But that was the good news.

Mike’s anger though, had gotten the better of him. By calling Tony, he had warned him.

But Reed understood his motives more than anybody. Mike wanted...needed...to confront the killer of his son. Blinded by rage, the call had been to let traitorous young heir know his treachery had been exposed.

Reed shook his head.

Like dominoes going the wrong direction, this had unwittingly given the young Manatone the upper hand and complicated matters. Without cell service at the ranch, the only form of communication was by landline, so when the grieving father had called back to warn Tony’s security detail, it was too late. Another fifteen minutes of calling went by before a female voice came on the line. It was the house custodian, Mrs. Myra Coolage. Hysterical and screaming, she’d told Mike that Mr. Manatone had gone berserk, killing his unsuspecting bodyguards before running out of the house.
